iPod Convert: Alternative Kitchen Garden

My podcast find this week gets me back into the garden (to commune with the bunnies). Alternative Kitchen Garden, by Emma Cooper, is an organic gardening podcast from Britain. Although I am consumed with envy when I consider all of her lovely gardening possibilities in a more temperate climate, I also took a look at her slug pictures and decided that maybe a few month of snow isn't the worst thing ever.

I've only had a chance to listen to a few podcasts, but Emma seems to have a knack for selecting engaging topics and conveying just the right amount of information without loosing a light and conversational tone. I'll admit that I was sold from the moment I saw that she devoted an entire episode to comfrey, although I did question her sanity after it became clear that she'd willingly planted hers (I apparently have both the self-seeding and the non-self-seeding varieties. I emphatically do not recommend the former. It will outmaneuver any other plant, including mint). Her website is attractive and easy to navigate, and there is an accompanying blog with plenty of pictures.

The podcasts are not long, which has its good and bad points. I have found myself wanting more of a particular topic (comfrey, for example), but the whole downloading-via-dial-up thing does increase my appreciation for brevity. And perhaps "pee as fertilizer" doesn't really need more that 10-15 minutes to explore fully. Your call.

AKG has made it to my subscribe list for the iPod, and I hope to stock up before our upcoming drive. Perhaps the hubby won't notice that it isn't Billy Bragg, what with the accent and all.

I love your podcast reviews :)

I have pictures of my slugs. I thought perhaps people would think I've gone completely obsessed with slugs if I posted them on my blog.

Crunchy Domestic Goddess had a post last month (or a few weeks ago, anyway) about pee in the garden. She had a day where everyone was supposed to pee with her. It was pretty funny. I think I grossed her out when I admitted using the bloody water that menstrual pads are soaked in on the garden. And now I've probably grossed you out too Haha!

Maybe Billy Bragg should start doing gardening/knitting/farming/domestic-oriented podcasts so everyones happy :)

Thanks! I'm a podcast addict, that I might as well do something productive with my obsession. Free (usually), informative, quirky, I just love the whole podcast concept, although I have no interest in producing my own.

Post slug pictures! I don't have nay problems with them, but then again, I don't have much of a garden left.

I know I'll try the pee thing. And I'm not grossed out by the bloody water thing ... pre-Diva cup days I struggled with how to gather the very same for my plants.

Hey, why waste perfectly good nutrients! And what a way to bond with your plants :o)

I'll check out Crunchy Domestic Goddess.
