Oh, I Meant That Other Wednesday

You know, as in Thursday, or Saturday, or the Wednesday following?

In my family, we often give directions in terms of “left and that other left,” by which we mean left and right. We are directionally challenged, you might (kindly) say. We also can’t spell or keep up with clutter, but neither of those topics really makes for good blog posts, just a mess on a page or in our homes. But I digress.

I don’t really view my resolve to post a new podcast review every Wednesday or so as having been breached, just brought into the fold of reality in my house. I actually haven’t been driving as much as of late, which has cut down on my podcast listening time. Still, I have found a few new podcasts of interest; it just took me two weeks to finish listening to one I thought I might review. I did, however, learn how to fast-forward on my iPod, which was really quite a revelation. This new skill features in my review.

My find was Creative Mom Podcast. It hasn’t made it into the heavy rotation of listening like Geek.Farm.Life yet, but I have subscribed, and look forward to the next installment. I struggle with claiming my own creativity as a working stiff, let alone a mother, so it seems to be a good reminder to own, explore and value my creativity. I could say I take creativity for granted, but that would imply that I had a long-term sense of security in my own talent, which I don’t. However, I am trying my very best to de-Virgo my assessment, and Creative Mom Podcast might just help me create the space to do that.

My main attraction to the Creative Mom Podcast comes from both this assumption that creativity is naturally worth nurturing and is an integral part to one’s being, and the ATC, or Artists Trading Card concept. So you create a card (on a theme) and send it to another participant, and receive one as well. I know that it is the basic swap idea, but on a doable scale (in my eyes). I’m not ready to jump in yet, but I may see what happens with the July ATC, and then sign on for August.

The first episode I listened to was Episode 103: Kaleidoscope. I particularly liked the book reviews (surprise!) but also the clips of Amy’s children as intros to different segments. It was nice, and not overdone. The downer was that I clearly have different taste in music than Amy, but that’s fine, and I have no compunction about skipping past what I’m not enjoying.

So while Creative Mom Podcast is a new find for me, I feel sufficiently intrigued to make it my second podcast review. The site is also clean and colorful, which makes it pleasant to visit (except when I’m using dial-up, but even then it isn’t too bad). I’m already excited about Episode 104: Patchwork.

Oh, and I just noticed Zen Shorts by John J. Muth in her book sidebar! (sigh) It's a real favorite around here, with both the short and the not-as-short sets.

I've also finished my first book in the 1% Well-Read Challenge, but I am mulling over my review. I didn't love it, yet I keep coming back to it. In the meantime, on to Small Remedies, by Shashi Deshpande. Hmmm. This one may be a bit harder to find.

I definitely need to check out this one.For someone who is supposed to be making a living off of her creativity,I'm awfully creatively-challenged lately.I need some new perspectives and inspiration.

For awhile,I was totally addicted to ATCs,both collecting and making them. Once you get into it, it can be a bit addictive.

And you're doing better on the 1% Well-Read Challenge than I. I keep getting sidetracked with homeschooling books and other things.

Check it out ... you know, it didn't always work for me, but I found most of it engaging and helpful with just expecting creativity as part of everyday life, giving your creative side some priority. That's a reminder I always need.

I'm excited about the ATCs, although I might make myself clean out some corners of the house before I'm allowed to collect anything more.

On the 1% Challenge ... it's funny, but other books are getting read at a much faster pace in my house! I guess I'm a bigger genre fan than I thought, because I keep gong back to mysteries. I can see how it would be easy to get sidetracked by homeschooling, since you kind of have an immediate demand!
